Mexico celebrates its independence on Wednesday 16, making this an ideal week for cumbia, beef-tongue tacos and tequila.
Hang with Mexicans
As Consul General Rubén Beltrán points out, you don’t have to look hard to find Mexicans in Nueva York. “We are all over the place,” he says, “from someone selling tamales to an economist on Wall Street earning six figures.” This week, many of them will be celebrating Mexico’s 199 years of independence. In addition to the Mexican Day parade along Madison Avenue on September 20, there will be myriad fiestas, like the one on Wednesday 16 at restaurant-bar-lounge Hecho En Dumbo (111 Front St between Adams and Washington Sts, Dumbo, Brooklyn; 718-855-5288). There, special guest DJ Tropicaza, a self-defined “vinyl archeologist” from Mexico City, will be spinning all kinds of Mexican musical gems and rarities from ’50s and ’60s rock to today’s pop and cumbia. Have a flor morada, a vodka drink made with homemade hibiscus juice, and be sure to try out some of the authentic Mexico City cuisine like the Sample Platter ($20), which features delicious versions of the country’s staples: tacos, burritos and sopes.
