BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn Announces 2010-2011 Contemporary Art Season at BRIC Rotunda Gallery

Brooklyn-affiliated artists question representations of reality in season opener Real Nonfiction

Brooklyn, NY BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn announces its 2010-2011 contemporary art exhibition season, opening Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at BRIC Rotunda Gallery. Committed to increasing the visibility and accessibility of contemporary art while bridging the gap between the art world and global culture in Brooklyn, the 2010-2011 season will present eight exhibitions:

The season opens with the exhibition Real Nonfiction: The Third Annual From the Registry Exhibition (Sept 15 – Oct 23), highlighting Brooklyn-affiliated artists included in the newly online BRIC Contemporary Artist Registry (registry.bricartsmedia.org) and exploring an age-old theme in the visual arts – the presentation of reality; Artist & Artifact: Re|Visioning Brooklyn's Past (Nov 10 – Dec 18) is a collaborative project with the Brooklyn Historical Society that supports artists to create new work in response to Brooklyn’s rich history; Neo-nomads: What travels with you? (Jan 19 – Feb 26) evokes the significance of intangible “objects” carried by the modern, digital-age nomad; and Water Water Every Where (March 16 – April 30), a group exhibition examining water’s ubiquity – its presence in our everyday life, in geopolitical reality, and in transcendent moments of existence. Two exhibitions will be held in the Project Room by recipients of the Lori Ledis Emerging Curator Fellowship, BRIC’s annual program that fosters emerging curatorial talent: A Strange Alchemy (Jan 19 – Feb 26), an exhibition of work that transforms organic materials to create work that borders on the baroque, uncanny and transcendental; and Chat Room (March 16 – April 30), which explores the trajectory of artist’s engagement with the public through social networking and communication. The annual BRIC Contemporary Art Education Exhibition (May 18 – June11) presents student work created over the course of the academic year under the auspices of BRIC Contemporary Art Education’s in-school residency program.

BRIC continues its popular Family Day series, free family art-making workshops that are inspired by exhibitions on view. Each Family Day is led by a professional artist and educator working with BRIC Contemporary Art Education in Brooklyn public schools.Workshops will take place from 12 to 3 pm on the following Saturdays: September 25, November 20, February 5, April 9, and May 21.

Exhibitions are on view at BRIC’s contemporary art space BRIC Rotunda Gallery, 33 Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights. Public programs also take place at the Gallery unless otherwise noted. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12 to 6 pm during exhibitions, closed holidays. All exhibitions and public programs are free of charge.
