BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn Presents Real Nonfiction at BRIC Rotunda Gallery
September 03, 2010
BROOKLYN, NY – BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn is pleased to present Real Nonfiction: The Third Annual From the Registry Exhibition opening Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 7 to 9 pm at BRIC Rotunda Gallery. The guest-curated exhibition series highlights Brooklyn-affiliated artists included in the newly online BRIC Contemporary Artist Registry (registry.bricartsmedia.org). Curated by Baseera Fox Khan and Jon Lutz, Real Nonfiction will be on view through October 23, 2010.
Real Nonfiction brings together works in varied media by damali abrams, Becca Albee, Alisa Baremboym, Ben Coonley & Dr. Jonathan Zizmor, Jesse Hamerman, Mike Hein, Tatiana Kronberg, Sheldon Sean Moyer, Carrie Pollack, and Amy Yao -- Brooklyn-based artists who express unusually perceptive views of the world around them and an equally insightful articulation of lived experience. Their art practices engage the tangible and intangible ephemera of their daily lives. In this sense, Real Nonfiction asks the viewer to inhabit the artist’s perspective, to forget categorical pre-conceptions, and to spend some time looking at this body of work as one looks at a document – observing and absorbing factual information that help us understand reality. By grounding this exhibition in the “real” and in “nonfiction,” the curators offer viewers an opportunity to meditate on issues related to truth and authenticity. Presented together, these works present a varied picture of reality that is at once complex, unquantifiable, and subjective.
All of these artists offer up their own histories and backgrounds as they infuse and reuse elements of popular and consumer culture in their work. Though some artists reveal their sources in a more direct, literal manner, others choose to represent a synthesis of things seen, heard, consumed, collected, and absorbed. Whether the art comes in the form of a television commercial, abstract painting, wall sculpture, or recorded Internet conversations, Real Nonfiction is dictated by the artist’s perspective and accounts, leaving us with few answers, yet many questions.
Ben Coonley & Dr. Jonathan Zizmor, Becca Albee, and damali abrams interrogate the boundary between art and its practical uses in the marketplace. Carrie Pollack, Sheldon Moyer and Mike Hein utilize an array of materials to create new forms and recall art historical precedents. Jesse Hamerman, Alisa Baremboym, Tatiana Kronberg, and Amy Yao investigate the signs and symbols of our time.
Real Nonfiction, the third edition of From the Registry, marks a milestone for BRIC’s Contemporary Art program. For the first time, curators have been able to draw on our new web-based Registry to research and select artists. The exhibition will showcase the Registry as a valuable, new resource available to Brooklyn-affiliated artists and their audiences, both locally and internationally.
The exhibition is curated by Baseera Fox Khan who served as Assistant Curator for BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn until July 2010 and is an artist currently pursuing an MFA at Cornell University, and Jon Lutz,an independent Brooklyn-based curator who currently operates a roving exhibition project entitled Daily Operation.
Public Program: Talent Show, scheduled for October 2, 2010 from 6 to 8pm, will feature performances by many of the artists from Real Nonfiction.
