BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn Receives Major Verizon Grant to Build Glass-Walled TV Studio and Upgrade Media Facilities

BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn, the public access TV provider for Brooklyn, has received a generous grant of $1.148M from Verizon to support BRIC Community Media’s expansion and upgrade of its existing facilities and its creation of a glass-walled television studio that will be the centerpiece of BRIC Arts | Media House.

The grant is part of a $4.4M capital grant award from Verizon made at the time Verizon entered into its franchise agreement with New York City. The funding will be used to expand valuable media facilities and resources for Brooklyn residents.  By strengthening community-focused, noncommercial television, Verizon is making a critical investment in Brooklyn as the borough’s new cable television provider.

The expansion of BRIC Community Media, which offers non-commercial television coverage, media education and state-of-the-art accessible television production facilities in Brooklyn, is a key component of BRIC Arts | Media House.  Scheduled for
completion in 2011, BRIC House will be a newly renovated state-of-the-art facility that
will include a glass-walled television studio and media center in addition to art exhibition and performances spaces.

“Verizon is truly committed to Brooklyn” said BRIC Executive Director Leslie Schultz. “With this grant, Verizon has reinforced the importance of public access television to the community and has demonstrated its significant commitment to civic life in the borough.”

Richard Windram, Director Government & External Affairs at Verizon commented ”Nothing says New York City quite like Brooklyn, with its diverse population, storied history and continued transformation. Verizon is building its revolutionary FiOS TV network throughout the borough to be an important part of the fabric of Brooklyn. Likewise, BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn has exhibited its ability to provide meaningful
programming, information and entertainment to Brooklyn’s residents.”
