Palette #1, 2014
Three-channel video
4:00 hours

Ivana Basic is a multimedia artist who creates skin and flesh in silicon, wax, rubber, and other synthetic substances reproducing the body as a material. Hung on hooks, draped on pedestals, and resting on pillows, her work examines human physicality and its limitations. Growing up in war torn Yugoslavia in the 90s, her artwork is informed not only by the frailty of the human body during political conflict but also the optimism of our current technological era with innovations leading to the creation of the digital body and self. Palette of Finity is a series of digital paintings created through algorithmic treatment of the artist’s skin. Polarized images of the artist’s skin are digitally treated so that the form dissolves reducing presence of the body to a fluid palette.

Basic was born in Belgrade, Serbia and is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. She has had solo and/or two-person exhibitions nationally and internationally at Gillmeier&Rech Gallery, Berlin; FREE PAARKING Gallery, St Louis, Missouri; Parobrod, Belgrade, Serbia; as well as group shows at Martos Gallery, Los Angeles; The Knockdown Center, New York; 820 Plaza, Montreal, Canada; Rod Barton Gallery, London; and East Art Gallery, Teheran, Iran.

While exhibitions are under installation, BRIC House closes the garage doors of its gallery and uses them as screens for this video series. The series highlights contemporary video artists in either single- or three channel projections that are looped from 10am-6pm and can be enjoyed while sitting on the BRIC Stoop and cafe.
