Brooklyn On Site featured so many dynamic performances, venues and presentations this past year that it was a challenge to chose some of our favorites. But Brooklyn On Site is always up for a challenge and we are pleased to present our most interesting visits in 2008.

There was so much to explore at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum that we had to split it into two parts! In this second episode, we join Brooklyn’s first “green” museum behind-the-scenes and get a first-hand look at its incredible new exhibitions. Kids under five let their imaginations run wild in the Technicolor play space known as Totally Tots, World Brooklyn. In Neighborhood Nature, young botanists explore the incredible biosphere that exists in Brooklyn’s backyards. Then, we take a gander at an elephant skeleton that’s the size of a SUV in the Collections Central exhibit. Try parking that downtown!

Take a behind-the-scenes look at NYC’s first “green” museum: the Brooklyn Children’s Museum! Featuring all-new exhibitions, including the imaginative play space Totally Tots, World Brooklyn — a celebration of local diversity and global communities, the backyard exploration of natural habitats in Neighborhood Nature, and Collections Central showcasing treasures from the Museum’s collection, such as an elephant skeleton the size of a minivan!

Part one of our coverage of the Brooklyn Bridge's 125th Birthday Celebration. Completed in 1883, the bridge is an iconic symbol of Brooklyn's strength and a cultural landmark. A number of fantastic dance and music groups helped to mark the occasion with events honoring the structure over a of a five-day birthday celebration. The Deedle Deedle Dees, featured at this celebration, are an educational rock band based in Brooklyn, NY. Since October 2003, the band has been entertaining family audiences with songs inspired by history and science — "Underground Railroad," "Nellie Bly," "Rancher Ants" — as well as simple movement-based tunes like "Play Your Hand" and "Vegetarian T-Rex."

Part Two of our coverage of the Brooklyn Maqam Arab Music Festival, presented by BAC Folk Arts. Maqam is the Arabic word referring to the patterns of musical notes based on a quarter note system, that form the building blocks of traditional Arab music. Highlighted in the program are local musicians, bands and dancers representing Arab musical traditions from Egypt, Yemen, Israel, Tunisia, Palestine, Iraq, Morocco, Syria, Lebanon and Sudan.
