A suburban flavor permeates this seaside community at the farthest end of the L train. Once one of New York's bustling beach resorts, since the second half of the twentieth century it has been better known as a coveted residential enclave, home to people of Italian, Jewish, Caribbean, Latin American and Asian origin.
