Neighborhood Beat: Fort Greene and Clinton Hill

In this section

Program Description

Fort Greene and Clinton Hill are adjacent neighborhoods with rich histories. Named after an American Revolutionary War era fort built in 1776, Fort Greene has evolved into a colorful community where quaint and charming meets contemporary cool. Clinton Hill maintains its classic architectural beauty with mansions and carriage houses reflective of its affluent past. Both have been deemed part of Brooklyn's new culinary mecca because of an impressive roster of hip little restaurants with fare as diverse as the neighborhood's population, along with chic boutiques and brilliant brownstones. Cultural and artistic institutions include Mocada - The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, BAM - The Brooklyn Academy, and the world renowned Pratt Institute. It's historic past can be found today through the neighborhoods' many churches including Queen of all Saints and Emmanuel Baptist Church, along with historical icons such as the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument located in Fort Greene Park.
