Originally inhabited by the Canarsee Native Americans, Park Slope was colonized by the Dutch and later became the backdrop for the Battle of Brooklyn during the American Revolutionary War. Many of the beautiful mansions and brownstones seen in the neighborhood were built after the late 1800s when the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge eased the commute for residents needing to travel to and from Manhattan.
Today the neighborhood is known for its historic buildings, hip restaurants and shops along 7th and 5th Avenues, family-friendly atmosphere, and its proximity to historic Prospect Park, the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and the Brooklyn Museum.
