P.S. 119, The Magnet School for Global and Ethical Studies, Midwood
At longstanding partner school P.S. 119, BRIC partnered with third, fourth and fifth grade classrooms. Ms. Davis' fifth grade class, led by Artist Teacher Kate Fauvell, studied the rich culture, history, and art of ancient Greece by implementing a project tied to contemporary art practice. Using what they learned about ancient Greece, the students carved and molded a series of life-size sculptures. A few of these projects are highlighted in the exhibition and will also be in view at P.S. 119's Magnet Expo!
GREECE THEN AND NOW
After studying renowned photographers like Diane Arbus and Seydou Keita, students and Brooklyn-based photographer Nora Herting transformed a P.S. 119 classroom into a portrait studio. Students explored ideas of self-representation and identity as they directed and posed for portraits. Sketches, props, and smiles in hand, the students expressed themselves effortlessly in front of the camera.
BROOKLYN PORTRAITS
P.S. 8, Brooklyn Heights
Pre-kindergarteners at P.S. 8 explored how four important 20th-century abstract artists - Kandinsky, Calder, Mondrian and Pollock - expressed their language through watercolor paintings, sculpture mobiles, painted paper collages, and "action" paintings. Now these fabulous 4- and 5-year olds are able to identify the styles of the four historic artists and understand what inspired them!
