FUNDRED Project at PS 119

BRIC Contemporary Art Education partner PS 119, The Magnet School for Global and Ethical Studies in Midwood, has been a key participant in The FUNDRED Dollar Bill Project. Initiated by artist and activist Mel Chin, this national collaborative art action has worked to call attention to the lead-contaminated soil in New Orleans that puts thousands of children at risk for severe learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Students across the country are making unique FUNDRED Dollar Bills that honor the value of each individual's action.

The PS 119 students and The FUNDRED Dollar Bill Project were included in the 2009 BRIC exhibiton A New Deal, Art and Currency curated by Baseera Khan.

Fifth grade PS 119 students have taught diverse members of the public about The FUNDRED Dollar Bill Project at the Brooklyn Museum, BRIC Rotunda Gallery, Gallery THE, PS 119, and other places around Brooklyn. PS 119 is a FUNDRED Safehouse, storing FUNDRED Dollar Bills made by students around the area and around the country. In spring 2010, an Armored Truck will come to PS 119 to pick up FUNDREDs housed at the school and take them to the Capitol in Washington D.C. to request of Congress an even exchange of the creative capital for real funding to clean lead-polluted soil in New Orleans.
