Video Paintings / Gossip, Fate & Policy

April 14 – May 28, 1988

Video Paintings features six video works in which former painter Kit Fitzgerald explores the visual link between the cool, electronic art of video and the warmer, naturalistic arts of painting and music. With Fitzgerald’s arrangement of six monitors in the space, the images are further enhanced through repetition.

Gossip, Fate and Policy is collaborative installation by Curt Belshe and Lise Prown addresses the personal, idiosyncratic, and ill-fated beliefs that foretold the sudden fall of five famous cities across history: Pompeii, Mexico City, Atlanta, Hiroshima, and Beirut. Examining the role of rumor, innuendo, and mythology, the piece illustrates how the assumptions of a population can fatally influence its history. The panoply of quotes and images resonates against our own culture and the ubiquitousness of rumors and misinformation within it.
