Cross Cultures: 3 Japanese Sculptors

November 9- December 16, 1989

This exhibition, curated by Margo Machida, will present work that reflects a strongly material-oriented sensibility within contemporary Japanese sculpture. Images of the man-made and natural worlds are juxtaposed in highly-crafted and self-contained sculpture by Keiichiro Momose, Toshiro Sasaki and Sho Shimotsugu. The three artistsshare a deep concern with craft and a conceptual orientation that spans East-West culture and history. Combining images of prehistory and archaeology with the stark beauty of natural forms, they present a timeless view of man’s world, its structures and its cycles.
