January 5 – February 11, 1989
This exhibition presents works whose creation arises from the area of the sacro-spiritual and magical ritual with roots found in ancient African civilizations. The creators of these works are artists as well as shamans, priests, priestesses, or seers. Whether they are formally schooled or have received less conventional educations, their artworks serve an important function within the process of personalized belief structures, be they codified as a religion or not. Such objects serve as silent testifiers to another reality, one that is wholly attuned to manifold expressions of the spirit. Exhibited artists include: Nancy Azara, Willie Birch, Juane Boza, Ogundipe Fayomi, Corinne L. Gaile, and Rhonda Schaller.
