Many artists in the African-American community are still limited by the lack of professional equipment and facilities. Crossover will attempt to expand the creative and technical boundaries in video for three artists of this community. La-Verne Cody Gittens (sculptor), Juma Santos (painter/photographer) and Onnie Millar (mixed media) will produce original video works for this exhibition.
Through images of the streets and people of the African-American community, Ex-Slaves by La-Verne Cody Gittens portrays the strength and potential of a captured people. Onnie Millar uses both live action and computer-generated animation in her video about a city boy who travels in time to the beginning of the universe. Black Artists on Africanity and Art by Juma Santos utilizes original music and photomontage from countries of the African diaspora, manipulated through computer graphics.
Robert Thompson is a video artist and president of Insight Production, Inc. For ten years he introduced video artists as the Director of Audiovisual Services at Pratt Institute where he designed and supervised videotape production and post-production studios.
