Angst: Cartography

April 1-May 15, 1993

Angst: Cartography is a conceptual/analytical study of the Gowanus Canal area of Brookyn by architects Mojdeh Baratloo and Clifton J. Balch. The Gowanus Canal area, a tidal waterway constructed in the mid- 19th century as an extension of Brooklyn’s commercial waterfront, is today a semi-industrial area of abandoned and active businesses, warehouses and residential pockets. Baratloo and Balch have superimposed their own system of maze-like cartography over existing Sanborn maps of the area. The map/ drawings are accompanied by contemporary black and white negative prints of nearby buildings or spaces and text by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities.
