Arranging like objects - laying bricks together to build shelter, stockpiling cans of food, and stringing words together into spells - can be seen as primary defensive actions against concrete dangers in the world. When this kind of arrangement is without a clear function, as in the case of a work of art, the act and/or the resulting object may be read as a compulsive one against a fear that is undefined, amorphous or internal. This exhibition features the work of nine artists, Bill Albertini, Lisa Alberts, Jackie Chang, Eve Andree Laramee, Charles Long, Patty Martori, Saul Ostrow, Elliot Puckette, and Lynne Yamamoto, curated by guest curator, Amanda Trager. Their work employs grids or other systems of repetitive arrangement, using objects from the real world, such as pins or crack vial tops, or representations of easily recognized forms, such as silhouettes or monopoly pieces.
