LIFE/BOAT

March 3-April 16, 1994

A group exhibition of work by L.C. Armstrong, Pietro Costa, Samm Kunce, Gary Bachman, Dan Devine, Jenny Scobel, Angela Bourodimos, and James Elaine in all media, curated by writer and critic Robert Mahoney, examining the significance of historical events in our contemporary perception of and response to place. The city represents a rich layering of historical and cultural events, which we often reference through monuments, markers and signs. There are other ways that urban spaces are sanctified: police seal off crime sites; friends and family create on-site memorials to accident victims. These are all places with a past-marking the intersection of prior use and present state. The exhibition will examine how we are affected by these spaces and why we hold some places in reverence and ignore or shun others.
