While critics and writers question abstraction’s ability to provide a relevant metaphor for contemporary life, a new generation of artists seem intent upon re-defining the notion. This group exhibition will consider contemporary abstraction in all media—from work that springs from classic “-isms” such as expressionism and minimalism to time-based process and installation art. As young artists are re-considering abstraction, the separation between figuration and abstraction has become less distinct. This exhibition will include works which can not easily be categorized as either figurative or abstract. This exhibition will be selected from the Rotunda Gallery’s Slide Registry of Brooklyn- affiliated artists by Gallery Director Janet Riker and Assistant Gallery Director Meridith McNeal.
