The Press of My Foot to the Earth Springs a Hundred Affection

Bios of Curator and Artists
School Program Lesson Description

Organized by painter Byron Kim, this exhibition examines the range and depth of painting engendered by landscape, and includes painters who start their work from an historical perspective, from nature, or purely from the imagination.

Diana Horowitz

Each of the artists ask and successfully answer the question demanded by landscape as a genre: "Where?" Artists are Nancy Diamond, Yvonne Estrada, Julie Heffernan, Diana Horowitz, Ma Ke-Lu and Lisa Sigal. The exhibition title is a line from a Walt Whitman poem. This exhibition was selected by the Gallery's Artists' Advisory Committee from an open call for curatorial proposals in November 1996.

School Program

School visits to The Press of My Foot to the Earth Springs a Hundred Affections included an interactive discussion comparing and contrasting the artwork in the exhibition. Students investigated the wide range of styles on display including Diana Horowitz' realistic cityscapes, the elegant scenes depicted in traditional Chinese dry brushwork by Ma Ke Lu, Yvonne Estrada's lyrical abstract environments and the strange and mysterious places painted by Julie Heffernan among others. Students tried their hand at least one of these methods working with pencil, pen and paint, to create their own mysterious environments.
