Interpreting explored the curatorial process, examining how choices are made and how work is categorized into a coherent whole. The exhibition was reflective of the broad diversity in aesthetic approaches in contemporary art today and featured the work of twenty-four artists with diverse content, media, aesthetic style and intent. Curators and writers Lynn Cooke (The Dia Art Center), Liah Gangitano (Thread Waxing Space), Rob Storr (Museum of Modern Art), and Lydia Yee (The Bronx Museum of Art) were asked to explore the interpretive and curatorial links they perceived among the works; this material was presented in written form at the gallery, as illustrated text on the Gallery’s website and as a CD-ROM exhibition catalogue accessible on computer terminals at the Gallery and at Thread Waxing Space and Art Resources Transfer in Manhattan. Interpreting was organized by guest curator Dena Shotenkirk and featured the work of: Terry Adkins, Stavit Allweis, Jennifer Bolande, Gregory Botts, Jessica Diamond, Christian Eckhart, Darrel Ellis, Meighan Gale, Maria Elena Gonzalez, Renee Green, Alex Grey, Perry Hoberman, Samm Kunce, Kerry James Marshall, Lynn McCarty, Michael Miller, Luke Murphy, David Nyzio, David Scher, Collier Schorr, Susan Silas, Haim Steinbach, Jessica Stockholder, and Julie Wachtel.
