Formulas for Revelation

April 8 - May 22, 1998

Formulas for Revelation explores the parameter of postmodern spirituality within the context of our increasingly secularized culture. The legacy of Judeo-Christian religion is quickly being usurped by increased manifestations of insular worship or extreme fundamentalism. Most notably, the advent of the new altar, the television, makes it possible for Christian mass to be celebrated within the alienated confines of one's home, as well as facilitating participation in evangelical congregations. Recently, Waco,Jonestown and the mass suicide of Nike clad cult members affirm society's still-flourishing necessity for religious affirmation, revelation, and transformation regardless of the technologically advanced climate in which we live. Even with the global connection of the internet, the quest for spirituality satiates a cultural imperative. We watch celebrities, our cultural leaders, engage in hysterical regiments of yoga, Kabbala lessons and conversions to the enigmatic fringes of Scientology.

Formulas for Revelation assumes that society still relies on spiritual structure. The artwork selected to prove this theory formally references media saturated society. The images presented do not necessarily refer to the traditional religious icons but rather suggest a more pantheistic spiritual resultant. Exhibited artists include: Christopher Beirne, Jeremy Blake, Jenny Gage, Michael Joseph, Tony Just Alex Kim, Rossana Martínez, Michael Scott, and Andrea Zittel.

Formulas for Revelation was curated by Michele Macarrone and Leslie Alexander. Michele Macarrone studied Art History at Barnard College, specializing in 17th century Roman Baroque art, created during a time when religion, politics and art were closely connected. She is currently director of Luhring Augustine Gallery in Chelsea. Leslie Alexander is an artist and independent curator whose work combines the technology of our time with concepts that are timeless. She is curator of the Fred Alger Management Company Collection of Art.
