November 9 - December 22, 2000
This is the Rotunda Gallery's second exhibition of contemporary design. We have watched the borough's community of designers expand in innumerable ways. Like many exhibitions at the Rotunda, Design Brooklyn 2000 includes artists just beginning their careers, as well as established artists - in this case, entrepreneurs guiding businesses with significant payrolls. Some work alone or informal partnerships, while others are engaged with production sources abroad, creating jobs and opportunities as far a field as Guyana, Japan, and South America. So many artists and designers work the line that once separated fine art and craft, that the notion now seems contrived and artificial. With Martha Stewart designing for Kmart and Frank Gehry on the payroll at Target, well designed objects are within reach of all. Design shapes the world around us. We hope Design Brooklyn 2000 will inspire us to consider more closely the often overlooked things that are part of our every day lives. By including models, drawings and prototypes, we hope to make viewers more aware of the creative process and the people behind objects.
Individual designers and firms included in Design Brooklyn 2000 are as follows: Hannah Brand, Julia D'Amario / Carreaux, Elseware Inc., Elseware Inc. / Janet Villano, Janice Farley, 5x5 design studio / Lynn Lane and David French, Roberto Gil, Girth Design, Evan Hughes Studio, Klydelights / Charles Flickinger and David Rosencrans, Konrad Kaletsch / Burgeoning Studios, Inc., Pearce Lashmett, Robert Martin, Amanda Moffat, Michael Puryear, David Provan / Provan, r+d design, Von Robinson, Janet Rutkowski / B.F.D.
