INvent/ONsite features artwork made by students at 11 different Brooklyn public schools participating in BRIC’s in-school contemporary art residency program. Exhibition curator and Director of Contemporary Art Education Hawley Hussey describes school-based programs as “site-specific hybrid residencies,” an idea that has driven the curatorial vision for INvent/ONsite. This exhibition features several site-specific installations that visually reflect BRIC’s in-depth engagement at each school. For the installations, student groups are making regular visits to BRIC Rotunda Gallery to view the space, plan the project, and install their work.

Featured student created, site-specific projects have been created in residencies at Juan Morel Campos Secondary School in East Williamsburg and the Dr. Susan S. McKinney Secondary School in Fort Greene. Students from Campos are collaborating with professional artists to create a multi-disciplinary installation  in BRIC Rotunda Gallery’s Project Room that dares to tell the non-linear, imagined, and actual story of an abandoned (and potentially haunted) building in East Williamsburg. Another student group from McKinney is creating a large-scale installation entitled Dear ______, What we talk about when we talk about ______that is a visual representation of students and artists as agents of change.

BRIC Contemporary Art Education partners professional artist teachers with classroom teachers to design educational residencies in math, English Language Arts, social studies, science, and other academic areas that meet the individual needs of each group of students. Each residency furthers curricular goals and teaches contemporary art ideas by using professional art-making materials. Artwork made by students in 2009-10 academic year is included in INvent/ONsite.
