Brooklyn Free Speech Celebrates Black History

In conjunction with Weeksville Heritage Center's February exhibition, In the Pursuit of Freedom, Brooklyn Free Speech will be on hand for a midday screening celebrating African-American history and traditions. Witness community produced shorts that portrait various facets of Black American Life through satire, art, and activism. Participate in the Q&A to take part in this ongoing and very relevant topic.

Hosted by Brooklyn Free Speech's own Matthew Allen & Jessica Mason.


FEATURED FILM & TV ARTISTS

Brian Wade is an emerging playwright, actor, director, performance artist, and Brooklynite. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia; Brian attended both Valdosta and Georgia State University before moving to New York to pursue film and theatre production. In 2009, 2010, & 2012, Brian produced successful Off Off Broadway stage readings of his highly anticipated script Colours.

On the film/television side of things, Brian has written, directed, and produced two critically acclaimed seasons of SubUrban Underground TV for Brooklyn Free Speech and has a much anticipated feature film by the name of Canvas debuting at select film festivals in early 2017.

Weeksville Heritage Center (WHC), Brooklyn’s largest African-American cultural institution, is a multidimensional museum dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African American community of Weeksville, Brooklyn - one of America’s first free black communities. Weeksville advances its mission through history, preservation, visual and performing arts, ecology and the built environment.
