David Bowie plays the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s weird and wonderful puppet/live action fantasy LABYRINTH, which also stars a very young Jennifer Connelly (proud Brooklynite!) and features Bowie singing throughout. Written by Monty Python’s Terry Jones and produced by George Lucas, the film follows 15-year-old Sarah (Connelly) as she searches through a massive otherworldly maze for her kidnapped baby brother. Originally released in 1986, it has since gained cult status. Come for Henson’s wild imagination, come for the music, come with the kids; come for the light-hearted tribute to the Thin White Duke.
DONNY McCASLIN GROUP, which backed Bowie on Blackstar, the extraordinary record he released days before his passing, starts the evening off with a set of originals and—who knows?—maybe a few covers. McCaslin “has been an agreeable spark plug in New York jazz circles for the past two decades,” and his “lithe, combustible” ensemble “has a bedrock relationship with groove, but also a genius for permutation.” (NY Times)
