A panel discussion about the effects of the current economic crisis in Puerto Rico. Panelists will include Miguel Luciano, Ed Morales, Ian Seda-Irizzary, Clarisa López Ramos, and others TBA.

Ed Morales is Lecturer, Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, Columbia University. He is an author and journalist who has written for The Nation, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, the Guardian, and City Limits, among many others. He is a former Village Voice staff writer and Newsday columnist and the author of Living in Spanglish (St. Martins) and The Latin Beat (Da Capo Press), as well as the upcoming Raza Matters (Verso Press). He is currently a lecturer at Columbia University’s Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, and hosts a show on WBAI-FM, 99.5 Pacifica Radio. He also produced and co-directed Whose Barrio? (2009) a documentary about the gentrification of East Harlem, which showed at several film festivals.

Ian Seda-Irizzary is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York. He contributes popular pieces for outlets like New PoliticsClaridad, El Nuevo Día, Diálogo, 80grados, Jacobin, AbrePasoRevista Amauta, and teleSUR. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Rethinking Marxism and the internet magazine Herencia Latina, and is a founding member of the Asociación Puertorriqueña de Economía Política.

Clarisa López Ramos is the daughter of recently freed Puerto Rican independence activist Oscar Lopez Rivera, one of the longest-serving political prisoners in the U.S..

This program takes place in conjunction with the exhibition Ride or Die: An exhibition of newly commissioned work by Miguel Luciano, on view at BRIC House from Feb 1 - March 5, 2017.

Venue Information:

The Stoop at BRIC House is a public cultural gathering space featuring free, drop-in programming, and offering a place to sit, observe, and participate in multi-disciplinary work.
