The Future is but the Obsolete in Reverse, 2016
Music by Matthew Anderson
Single-channel video
8 minutes
As a 2016 Media Arts Fellow at BRIC, painter Jason Mitcham created The Future is but the Obsolete in Reverse through a process of stop-motion animation on paintings and drawings combined with live action footage to explore modern ruins, entropy, and time. Structured in three movements, the work ruptures and rearranges past, present and future through tracing, fracturing of images, loops, and shifts in scale/distance/viewpoint, all building to a frenetic finish. In the process of creating the video, the paintings become topographic “terrains” of built up layers. In the end they stand as archaeological remnants of the process.
While exhibitions are under installation, BRIC House closes its gallery “garage” doors and uses them as screens for this video series. The series highlights contemporary video artists in either single- or three channel projections that are looped from 10am-6pm and can be enjoyed while sitting on the BRIC Stoop and cafe.
