Focusing on the phenomena of remixing and sampling of dub culture, DJ and video artists in this improvisational multimedia collaboration use turntables, drum machines, projectors and other digital and analog tools to weave an audiovisual tapestry. Presented by Red Clay Arts.

Tish Benson and Liza Jesse Peterson are holding service with a collective of artists who have embraced and abandoned traditional forms of theater. In the spirit of the griot, they conjure voices from the past, present and future; laced with the essence of blues, jazz, gospel, spirituals, funk, rock and hip-hop. A discussion and multimedia works from two online projects produced as part of BAM's New Media Initiative for www.bam.org: Before and After Geography, a work for the web featuring a remaking of Ralph Lemon's dance piece Tree; and Under_score: Net art, Sound, and Essays, exhibiting the work of nine Australian net artists. Discussants include Wayne Ashley, Manager of New Media, BAM; Vivian Selbo; Carl Skelton; Lane Czaplinski; Allen Feldman; and McKenzie Wark. Thundergulch is the new media arts initiative of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

David Hollander will read from his critically acclaimed novel, L.I.E. (Villard, 2000); a look into the confused life of teens growing up on "the island" in the 1980s. Nelly Reifler, whose stories have appeared in magazines including Bomb, Exquisite Corpse and Mississippi Mud, will also read.


RED CLAY PRACTICUM: Multimedia Rumba

Dealing with the ritual and transcending power of dance and concepts of community, the Multimedia Rumba reinforces those universal concepts while adapting them to a new technological terrain.
