Alliance for Community Media National Conference Comes to BRIC House In Downtown Brooklyn

The national gathering of prominent media leaders, producers, content creators, and entrepreneurs will take place June 27-29.

 

(Brooklyn, New York – May 5 2023) The Alliance for Community Media (ACM) is partnering with BRIC, a leading arts and media institution, in Brooklyn this year to host the organization’s National Conference, “B Transformed for Good, #BT4G.” The conference runs Tuesday, June 27 – Thursday, June 29 at BRIC House (647 Fulton Street) in the Downtown Brooklyn cultural district.

The conference provides an opportunity for community media professionals from across the country to celebrate and explore the meaning of making hyper-local, neighborhood, and community-based media. REGISTER HERE.

For the first time since the Alliance for Community Media held its first national conference in 1978, the conference is being held at a community media center. This is special for many reasons – media professionals will learn, create it’s being held at BRIC which lives in the greatest city in the world, Brooklyn is holding its national conference at a community media center. For the last Normally held in conference spaces, The convergence of media professionals in one of the conference provides an opportunity for community media professionals from across the country to celebrate and explore the meaning of making hyper-local, neighborhood, and community-based media.

Featured speakers at “BTransformed4Good” include Joshua Breitbart, Senior Vice President of ConnectALL, the State of New York’s organization assigned with developing and extending broadband and digital equity for all residents; and Dr. Nettrice Gaskins, the African American artist and academic whose work focuses on techno-vernacular creativity, Afrofuturism, and artificial intelligence.

While most of the conference attendees work in community media, the conference is open to all, and offers sessions that are relevant to those who work in education, journalism, youth development, and technology.

Wednesday night features the 45th Annual Hometown Media Awards, which recognizes and honors the work of creators who address community needs, challenge conventional commercial television formats, and move viewers to experience media in a different way.

“New York City is a leader in support and development of community television in the United States, and has vibrant and exciting organizations leading this work,” said Mike Wassenaar, President and CEO of the Alliance for Community Media. “It’s time we recognize and celebrate the work of organizations like BRIC, Manhattan Neighborhood Network, BronxNet, Queens Public Television, and Staten Island Community Television. This is our opportunity.”
