In 2008, Gabriela Galván visited the commercial area located around Flushing, Queens where most of the shops (at that time) offered items for 99 cents. In one of the stores, she found 80 hand-woven sweaters for 99 cents each. She bought all of them. For Galvan, the sweaters raise the question: how it is possible that these items, in which workers invested many hours, some of them days, were being sold for just 99 cents each? Galvan installs these sweaters in intersecting and overlapping designs to reference what she calls “social knitting” or the interconnectedness of people both making and consuming these objects. The works are displayed on the floor, referencing hawker trade on blankets and palettes where objects are ordered based on aesthetics (color and materials) as opposed to purpose or value.
Gabriela Galván was born in Mexico City and lives and works in Brooklyn. She has exhibited in Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía, Spain; in her native home of Mexico at Museo Tamayo, Museo de Arte Moderno; and Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico in collaboration with the Centre George Pompidou, among others. Recent public projects include Aquatic Random at Staten Island Ferry Terminal, NY. She was an artist in residence at OMI International Arts Center, NY, and the International Studio & Curatorial Program of New York, and at the Fundacion Casa Wabi, Mexico.
The Project Room at BRIC House is dedicated to work by emerging Brooklyn artists and curators who are interested in advancing their practice.

The Project Room, located adjacent to the Gallery in BRIC House is an added resource for video work, BRIC's emerging curator program, small-scale exhibitions and experimental curatorial projects.
Beginning Nov. 1, 2022, attendees of any BRIC House programming will no longer have to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter the building.
