BRIC Announces Applications for the 2023-2024 BRIClab Artist Residency Are Now Open
The multi-disciplinary residency program builds a more robust, diverse, and inclusive artistic community in Brooklyn across visual arts, performance, and media through fostering relationships and providing individualized accommodations based on need.
(BROOKLYN, NY —March 22, 2023) BRIC, a leading arts and media institution, is pleased to announce that applications for the 2023-2024 BRIClab Residency are now open for New York City-based artists seeking to deepen their practices in Contemporary Art, Film + TV, Performing Arts, and Video Art. BRIClab is a multi-disciplinary residency program created to offer emerging and mid-career artists essential resources, financial support, mentorship, skills-based learning opportunities, and a chance to share their work with their peers and the public. For the first time, the Contemporary Art track will have a specific theme, “All My Relations,” focusing on artists whose practices embody and recognize interdependence and interconnectedness. The residency aims to build a stronger and more diverse artistic community in Brooklyn by fostering relationships, supporting long-term growth, and creating a pipeline of engagement with BRIC. The program supports artists to freely and diligently explore their practices. Each of the four creative tracks offers a unique set of resources tailored to meet the needs of varied artistic practices. All residents receive a stipend of $2,500.
The Video Art residency supports six artists with free media courses, equipment, and 80 hours of access to BRIC’s community media studios and editing suites. Artists will also be paired with a relevant mentor, and receive access to consultations with BRIC curatorial staff and previous residents. The Film + TV residency accepts three emerging to mid-career documentary filmmakers working on short form, episodic, or feature-length non-fiction films. Residents receive access to courses, production studios, post-production resources, networking events, and professional development opportunities. They will also be given opportunities to collaborate and engage in group critiques with an assigned mentor and cohort of peers. The Contemporary Art residency supports five emerging artists and welcomes applications from artist collectives and collaboratives. For the first time, the Contemporary Art residency has a specific theme, “All My Relations.” The theme is inspired by practices of disabled artists and activists and honors indigenous communities who use the term “All My Relations” to acknowledge our necessary interdependence with one another and the planet. The residency seeks artists who embody this idea in process or product. Examples include work that recognizes history or lineage; work made in kinship, or collaboration; processes that provide access in creative ways for audiences and viewers; or projects that make visible the often hidden networks of support and care that are essential for artistic creation.
Selected artists, who can participate in-person, virtually, or in a hybrid manner, will have access to an expanded program that will involve teaching, learning, and sharing on topics of authorship, including alternatives to mentorship; the relationship of support and care within the context of artistic making; and modes of artistic production that include an expansive definition of collaboration. The program will ask artists to choose their peer advisors and/or artistic advisors and will receive the opportunity to exhibit works in a BRIC House exhibition of the same theme in Fall 2024. The 12-day Performing Arts residency welcomes artists working in music, dance, theater, and multidisciplinary performance who want to make new work that is relevant to diverse Brooklyn audiences. Free and open exploration and intentional commitment to process are at the heart of the program. Artists receive studio space, resources, and support, including opportunities for artistic mentoring and work-in-process performances. As part of BRIC’s commitment to addressing systemic inequities in creative fields and industries and efforts to expand access for disabled artists, audiences, and staff, BRIC has worked closely with current BRIClab artist Ezra Benus on making the application process and information on BRIClab more accessible and transparent. BRIClab prioritizes applications from disabled, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ artists. Applicants will not be asked to verify their disability in any way. BRIC will work with all selected artists to support an accessible and accommodating residency. Applicants must submit their applications by May 8, 2023. BRIClab selection panels reflect BRIC’s values and artists and will include disabled, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ reviewers made up of BRIC staff, alum artists, and active participants in relevant fields. Evaluation will be based on how the goals of the proposed projects align with resources available, relevant work samples, and the creation of diverse and representative cohorts. The new residents will be notified in Summer 2023. In-process public programs for the 2023/2024 cohort will occur from September 2023 through May 2024.
