BRIC is pleased to highlight the four recipients of our BRICworkspace visual artist residency program for Fall 2017. BRICworkspace provides professional, practicing artists with free studio space, a stipend for materials, and visits with curatorial staff from BRIC and other local institutions, and an open studio event. The residency program is now in its fourth year and is open to artists who live, work, or were born in Brooklyn. This fall's residents include Jonathan Allen, Tusia Dabrowska, Maria Hupfield and Josephine Messer. These artists all share studio space at 505 State Street, a satelitte residency location generously donated by Alloy.

Let me make this clear, I did not come up making radio. I don’t have any stories about gigging at my college radio station playing Chuck Brown 45s while doing questionable character sketches with friends. Well, I did do those things, but with video cameras. I’m a filmmaker.

Artist Kenneth Pietrobono, whose piece Terms and Conditions (On Wanting), was part of BRIC's Whisper Or Shout exhibition last spring, shares his reflections and observations from the completed public cycle of that project, in which, for 31 days, he wore shirts containing a somewhat abstract word or phrase – academic and analytical language about our environment, but a level removed.
BRIC believes that the arts have the power to move beyond representation and critique into work that directly enables communities to effect change, both in attitude and in action.
Steven Baines’ oil paintings aim to be metaphors for the passage of time, the brevity of human life. They often continue the traditions of Vanitas and Momento Mori paintings. However they are not heavy or morbid.
