A Letter From Our President:

In this moment of profound reckoning for our country, I'm stunned by having witnessed so brazenly the ongoing consequences of whiteness being weaponized against Black bodies. I grieve for the Black lives taken from us: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others. Lindsey Wolkowicz is a visual artist whose work primarily lies in drawing, but also utilizes sculpture, video and performance. Through the intersection and interruption of figures and abstracted spatial elements created by lines, color, geometry and planes, her work on paper examines the way the body occupies space. Her three dimensional work is set up in a way to physically connect with the viewer.

Miya Ando's metal canvases and sculpture articulate themes of contradiction and juxtaposition of ideas. The foundation of her practice is transformation of surfaces. Half Japanese and half Russian-American, Ando is a descendant of Bizen sword makers and was raised in a Buddhist temple in Japan and in coastal Northern California.

Neill works with shape, form, line and color in several different media to create abstract works that draw attention to the fluidity of time. Her works are process-oriented and carry references to aspects of nature such as weather and the color of earth, sea, and sky.

The artists I have selected from the BRIC Registry use a broad reach of tactile media including textiles, sewing, crochet and woodwork—many of which as a craft or practice are centuries old. Decades ago, artists collapsed the notion that these traditional media are for conventional use only, embedding them with contemporary issues and conceptual ideas. Is it a collective need in our techno-driven age to reconnect with tradition and the era of handmade objects?

Jessica Angel's Art Takes Over the BRIC House Cafe

For months, folks have been enjoying Garry Nichols mural in the Hungry Ghost cafe area at BRIC House. On Sunday, Feburary 23, a new mural will decorate the cafe area, mesmerizing visitors and transforming the space yet again. The new cafe mural will be created by Colombian-born artist Jessica Angel. We recently spoke with Jessica about her art practice and about her new work of art that will grace BRIC House.

Karen Ostrom is a Canadian born Brooklyn based artist working in photography, installation, video and most recently, animation. Patent Pending, her most ambitious project to date was the result of a yearlong collaboration between Ostrom and Toronto composer Shannon Graham, presenting a unique collaboration of original live music and multiple projections at the CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto.
