The Portrait is Political is a trio of exhibitions united by Jaishri Abichandani, Liz Collins, and Texas Isaiah's varied use of portraiture to explore and validate the idea of the individual. These artists, and the artists brought together by curator and artist Liz Collins, each use their work to focus on subjects who represent marginalized, under-recognized communities in Brooklyn.

BRIC, the leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn, is pleased to announce that it has received 11 nominations for the 61st Annual New York Emmy® Awards. The nominations include nine for BRIC TV, the Brooklyn-focused nonprofit cable channel and digital network BRIC launched to acclaim in 2015, and two for shows produced through BRIC’s Brooklyn Free Speech Public Access initiative.

Artist Kenneth Pietrobono, whose piece Terms and Conditions (On Wanting), was part of BRIC's Whisper Or Shout exhibition last spring, shares his reflections and observations from the completed public cycle of that project, in which, for 31 days, he wore shirts containing a somewhat abstract word or phrase – academic and analytical language about our environment, but a level removed.

Dana Kane is a Brooklyn-based visual artist. Driven by a fascination with historical narratives and notions of identity and environment, Kane relies on intuition as a catalyst for her various projects. Her pieces often employ found materials in the creation of colorful and visually engaging abstract compositions. Kane presents the viewer with an emotional depiction of the world around her, referencing both the political and humorous, the moving and the still.
