BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Cancels Opening Night Concert Out Of Community Wellness Concern Due To Poor Air Quality in New York City

(New York, New York, June 7, 2023) – BRIC, the internationally-renowned arts and media institution based in Brooklyn, has announced the cancellation of tonight’s BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! opening night concert due to the poor air quality index in New York City. The outdoor festival was set to kick off its 45th anniversary year at the Lena Horne Banshell in Prospect Park with co-headliners Taj Mahal and Corinne Bailey Rae and opening act Harlem Gospel Travelers. Due to scheduling commitments the show will not be rescheduled.

BRIC President Wes Jackson states, “Due to the unprecedented air quality situation in New York, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!’s opening night. The health of our staff and the communities we serve is the number one priority for BRIC and we can’t, in good conscience, risk the wellbeing of our friends and neighbors who may have high risk health issues. We’re excited to see you this Saturday for our Family Day and all summer long for the rest of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! season.”

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! is slated to resume with their Family Day concert on Saturday, June 10, with an incredible line-up of Brooklyn-based talent including the innovative duo Soul Science Lab and openers Olivia K and The Parkers.

Regularly attracting upwards of 250,000 attendees, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! is the longest-running, free summer music festival in New York City and has become one of the city’s foremost summer attractions and a true staple of Brooklyn culture. From its very first performance in the summer of 1979, the mission of the festival has been to bring Brooklyn together and showcase the borough’s growing reputation as a global cultural destination.

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! runs through August 24th – view the full festival lineup here, and stay tuned for additional details on the 2023 season as they’re announced!
