BRIC CELEBRATE BROOKLYN! PRESENTS
INAUGURAL CONCERT AT HIGHLAND PARK
IN BROOKLYN JUNE 25
WHO: BRIC, a Brooklyn-based leading arts and media institution, earlier this week announced its 2023 festival lineup for BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!, inclusive of 20+ free shows, benefit concerts, dance performances, and more. This year, marking its 45th anniversary, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! teams up with Council Member Sandy Nurse to present a free offsite pop-up concert at Highland Park.
WHAT: Drumming and dance collective Rueda de Oro will lead the community in a family-friendly interactive workshop. Festival goers should come ready to drum, dance, and sing! Participants are also encouraged to wear dance skirts and bring traditional percussion or conga drums. Singer Andre Veloz will also bring her high energy, good humor, and 4-piece band for an afternoon of bachata. The celebration will culminate with a DJ set by GabSoul spanning hip-hop, reggae, R&B, and world, inviting all to dance.

ABOUT ANDRE VELOZ:
Andre Veloz is a singer, songwriter, painter, and actor. Her surname (English translation: “fast”) bespeaks the daring of a woman who has plunged headlong into the male-dominated world of Dominican bachata, making no excuses and begging no quarter. Her oh-so-soulful voice – pure, sonorous, and effortless – is tailor-made for this genre, popularly known as the “Dominican Blues.” Andre Veloz was born in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and raised in Santiago, the capital of the Dominican Republic’s heartland known as El Cibao. Andre Veloz re-connected with her roots in New York City where she and her family settled in 2004. Always open to the song and dance of its newest residents, the Big Apple has served as an incubator for many musical genres, including Jazz, Latin Jazz, Salsa, and, since the 1990s, for Bachata. It was to this world that Ms. Veloz came to life and soon her repertoire gravitated to old school boleros and bachatas. While Andre Veloz is very much a part of that NYC Bachata scene, she contributes her own saucy, fanciful, and feminine sensibility. Says she: “We female Bachata singers are like unicorns. People think we are a myth, but WE DO EXIST!”
ABOUT RUEDA DE ORO:
La Rueda de Oro (The Golden Drum Circle) is an NYC based musical collective that delves into Afro-Colombian rhythms such as Cumbia, Bullerengue, Tambora, and Gaita percussion Cumbia styles. Participants meet on a weekly basis, to learn and practice a rich catalog of traditional music. The weekly meetings rotate from borough to borough, to increase access for New Yorkers. In the summertime the collective meets at various public parks and during the winter it alternates workshops between May Day Space in Bushwick and the Bronx Music Heritage Center in the Bronx. The collective is an inviting and open space for all people interested in music, dance, song, and cultural heritage.
ABOUT GABSOUL:
Born and bred in New York, GabSoul, aka “the Illustrious Eclectic Selecta,” is a first generation Caribbean-American DJ and multi-hyphenate artist who has garnered acclaim for her colorful sound palette and expertise in mixing various genres of music; including R&B/Soul, hip hop, funk, house, and music from across the Afro-diaspora. She’s known for her ability to create unique and dynamic sets that blend old-school classics with modern hits and everything in between, gaining recognition for her stage presence, smooth transitions, and technical skills which enable her to seamlessly mix tracks and create a cohesive musical experience. She has performed at numerous events and venues throughout the US and internationally, including AFROPUNK FEST, R&B ONLY, Boiler Room, and beyond; and has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the music scene. Deeply rooted in her spirituality, she places emphasis on self-empowerment and uplifting the collective through her work, and continues to inspire and entertain audiences around the world with her musical prowess.

QUIÉN: BRIC, institución líder en las artes y los medios, anunció a inicios de esta semana su programación completa del festival BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! del 2023, que incluye más de 20 espectáculos gratuitos, conciertos benéficos, presentaciones de danza y mucho más. Este año, que marca su aniversario número 45, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! se une a la concejal Sandy Nurse para presentar un concierto pop-up gratuito en Highland Park.
QUÉ: El colectivo de percusión y danza Rueda de Oro dirigirá a la comunidad en un taller interactivo apto para toda la familia. ¡Los visitantes del festival deben llegar preparados para tocar tambor, bailar y cantar! SOBRE ANDRE VELOZ:
Andre Veloz es una cantante, cantautora, pintora y actriz. Como bien lo indica su apellido, es una mujer que se ha lanzado sin excusas ni tregua al mundo dominado por los hombres de la bachata dominicana. Su conmovedora voz —pura, sonora y fluida— está hecha a la medida para este género, popularmente conocido como “blues dominicano”. Andre Veloz nació en St. Croix, Islas Vírgenes de los Estados Unidos, y fue criada en Santiago, capital de la región de El Cibao, conocida como el corazón de la República Dominicana. Andre Veloz volvió a conectarse con sus raíces en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde se radicó en el 2004 junto con su familia. Siempre abierta a los cantos y bailes de sus nuevos residentes, la Gran Manzana ha servido de incubadora de muchos géneros musicales, entre ellos el jazz; el jazz latino; la salsa; y, desde los años noventa, la bachata. Es en este mundo en el que surge Veloz cuando su repertorio empieza a gravitar hacia los boleros tradicionales y la bachata. Si bien Andre Veloz forma parte integral de la escena de la bachata en la ciudad de Nueva York, ella aporta su propia sensibilidad atrevida, imaginativa y femenina. SOBRE RUEDA DE ORO:
La Rueda de Oro es un colectivo musical radicado en la ciudad de Nueva York que ahonda en ritmos afrocolombianos como la cumbia, el bullerengue, la tambora y la música de gaita. Los integrantes se reúnen semanalmente para aprender y practicar un valioso repertorio de música tradicional. Los encuentros semanales rotan de vecindario en vecindario para ampliar el acceso de los neoyorquinos. Durante el verano el colectivo se reúne en diversos parques públicos y durante el invierno alternan talleres entre May Day Space en Bushwick y Bronx Music Heritage Center en El Bronx. El colectivo es un espacio abierto que da la bienvenida a todos aquellos interesados en la música, la danza, el canto y la herencia cultural.
