The Books emerged in June 2002 with the release of their first album, Thought for Food, after two years of working on and off in makeshift studios in New York, Los Angeles, Andover, Massachusetts, and Hot Springs, North Carolina. The duo’s extensive library of recorded-sound samples also includes a growing collection of video samples which they use both on stage and for installations and movies of a more permanent nature. Add to this mix a set of machines that rhythmically blow giant smoke rings plus a rattling filing cabinet as a rhythm section and an idea of The Books’ unique style emerges. Perhaps best classified as dizzying folktronica – a mix of innovative instrumentation and songwriting with obscure found sound and speech samples—and perfectly calibrated, hallucinatory quick-cut video collages, the duo’s 4th album The Way Out was released in 2010. Pitchfork aptly dubs The Books “more or less a genre of one… the flotsam and jetsam of American culture aren’t a cheap joke to The Books, but a source of endless discovery and joy.”
Junip, the group that predates Swedish-Argentine singer Jose Gonzalez’s solo stardom, is a cosmopolitan three piece from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band’s 2010 album, Fields, was 10 years in the making and features Tobias Winterkorn (keyboards), Elias Araya (drums) and José González (vocals & guitar). González and Araya have been playing together since they were each 14 years old, and Junip conjures an expansive and mesmerizing sound in which “Gonzalez’s classical guitar and weightless tenor float over soul jazz, Afrobeat, Ethiopian funk and krautrock.” (Rolling Stone)
