BRIC Media Maker Weekend: “Roadmap: Evolve Your Creative Future”

BRIC is pleased to announce the programming schedule for its annual Media Maker Weekend, set to take place from October 14 – 16, 2021. The three-day, virtual conference offers free workshops, lectures, and panel discussions designed to educate makers on various aspects of media and content creation, including television, film, and podcasting.

This year’s theme is “Roadmap: Evolve Your Creative Future.” As the world has learned to work and interact with their community from home, many media makers are looking to pivot content creation from just a side hustle or passion project into a self-sustaining enterprise. The workshops and lectures this year are designed to provide proper resources and guidance to media makers of all levels of expertise to use in an effort to advance their skills & ambitions to the next level.

Thursday, October 14

Choosing Editing Platforms
Time: 4:00 – 5:00pm

Speaker: Edgardo Parada
Description: Post-production is the difference between having a good project and a great project. There are many kinds of editor softwares and platforms on the market and BRIC Adult Education Instructor Ed Paraja will explain examples and differences of numerous accessible non-linear editing interfaces.

Right Tool For The Right Job: Choosing Cameras
Time: 5:30 – 6:30pm

Speaker: Leo Jimenez

Description: When it comes to cameras, one size does not fit all. It’s important to know which equipment will fit in the proper scenario. Filmmaker Leo Jimenez will discuss which cameras work best for TV, feature films, documentaries, music videos, and more.

Perfect Your Pitch

How To Host: Interviewing Techniques

Speaker: Yosef Alexander

Being in front of the camera takes skill, charisma, instinct, scholarship and confidence. For this workshop, BRIC Adult Education Instructor Yosef Alexander gives you the pointers you need to be an engaging host, how to prepare for an interview, how to ask follow-up questions, as well as hosting for a virtual audience.

Audio Documentary Making
Time: 3:30 – 4:30pm

Speaker: Matt Nelson

The evolution of podcasting has seen the creation of audio documentaries that are just as compelling as visual ones. Matt Nelson, co-creator of Gimlet Media popular podcast series Mogul, will share secrets on the intricacies of what goes into creating an episodic podcast that follows a linear story.

B Scene Screening: “Your Pain Is Born Here”
Time: 5:00 – 6:00pm
Speakers: Mina Brooks, Jessica Mason (moderator)

B Scene is a thematic screening series that highlights the work and producers of the Brooklyn Free Speech TV & Podcast Network. Watch the premiere of Mina Brooks’ documentary film, “Your Pain Is Born Here,” a look at how Black American culture is perceived overseas and how it affects members of the African Diaspora abroad.

Keynote Address

Keynote Speaker: New York Times Bestselling Author, Rob Kenner

Rob Kenner is one of the most prolific and influential voices in hip hop publishing. A founding editor of Vibe, Kenner joined the start-up team of Quincy Jones’s groundbreaking hip hop monthly in 1992. During a nineteen-year run at Vibe he edited and wrote cover and feature stories on iconic cultural figures ranging from Tupac Shakur to Barack Obama as well as writing the acclaimed column Boomshots. Kenner’s writing has appeared in Complex, Genius, Mass Appeal, Pigeons & Planes, Ego Trip, Poetry magazine, The New York Times, and Billboard. He’s also produced and directed documentary shorts on the likes of De La Soul, Nas, and Post Malone. As an editor at Vibe Books, Kenner worked on the New York Times bestseller Tupac Shakur and contributed to The Vibe History of Hip Hop. He went on to co-author VX: 10 Years of Vibe Photography and produced the book Unbelievable, a biography of The Notorious B.I.G. by Cheo Hodari Coker, which was optioned for the motion picture Notorious.

Description: One of the most important aspects of media maker is almost one of its most overlooked; the importance of protecting your intellectual property. Attorney Stephanie Hay will present numerous methods and information behind copyrights, fair use, trademarking your ideas, titles, brands, scripts and more.

Media Finance 101
Time: 2:30 – 3:30pm

Speaker: Esther Lelievre

Description: Shooting a film, recording a podcast or making a web series sounds like fun, and it can be. However, it’s so crucial to pay attention to the details when it comes to making sure that actors, crew members, writers, directors are compensated. BRIC Administrative and Special Programs Manager Esther Lelierve runs down contracts, invoices, and budgeting for media makers.

How To Generate Capital

Speaker: Cloe Luv

Description: There are so many ways to finance your media project, but which way works best for you? Entrepreneur Cloe Luv runs down the list of ways to generate capital for your project or company, via crowdfunding, underwriting, sponsorships, and investments.
