Come and hear a discussion of the world of urban education through the lens of a middle school principal whose driving mission is to teach this country’s most disenfranchised and disadvantaged children. In 2015 the magnetic young principal Nadia Lopez, and the school she founded, Mott Hall Bridges Academy in Brownsville, Brooklyn, rocketed to national fame after one of her students explained to Brandon Stanton for his wildly popular site Humans of New York, that his principal “Ms. Lopez” thinks “we matter,” and she was the person who most influenced his life. The post went mega-viral. Lopez found herself in the spotlight and headed for a meeting with President Obama. BRIDGE TO BRILLIANCE: How One Principal in a Tough Community is Inspiring the World is her first-person account of what it took to get to that moment. Lopez will talk about her work in Brooklyn and her internationally resonant story with CNN contributor, image activist, writer, feminist, and community servant Michaela Angela Davis. Images from Humans of New York blog to be featured as part of this BRIC Stoop Series event.

This program is a collaboration with Greenlight Bookstore.
