Brooklyn’s best daytime family parties continue! Hands-on art making, gaming and technology exploration, storytelling, and live performances all culminate in a raucous dance party for all ages!

For our April House Party, ignite your imagination with stories, arts, and games from global island cultures.

Explore the Bordering the Imaginary exhibition in the Gallery of BRIC House in order to complete our scavenger hunt!

Event Sponsor Table: NYU Tandon School of Engineering 
Stop by our event sponsor table and watch a 3D printer from NYU Tandon's MakerSpace create a 3D object throughout the course of the day. There will also be a couple of student projects on view as well. The MakerSpace is a collaborative workspace and lab at NYU Tandon that provides even greater opportunities for students and faculty to engage in innovative and entrepreneurial activities. The space highlights new kinds of iterative, interdisciplinary teamwork using new tools of rapid prototyping and digitally driven production.

Art-Making Activity 1: The Art of the Vèvè
Connect with Haitian culture and create your own version of a handmade Vèvè flag!

Art-Making Activity 2: RaRa!
Whether RaRa or Carnival, Haitian and Dominican peoples celebrate their culture through food, song, dance, and communal gatherings. Create a wearable paper mask that reflects one of the cultures and join in the festivities!

Art-Making Activity 3: Hispaniola Reimagined
Learn what makes the countries of Hispaniola both similar and unique in this activity. Create people, places, and scenery that reflects the cultures of both the Dominican Republic and Haiti in this 3D communal activity.

Digital Remix Educational Activity: Kompa and Bachata Dance Floor              
Animate a festive scene of people dancing the Kompa and Bachata (traditional dances with Haitian and Dominican roots). Create costumes, instruments, and other scenery to bring the animation to life!

Join in for whole family fun! Family Arts presents an Imaginative Island Adventure. We'll Create an underwater mural, celebrate the carnival principles of unity and joy, and use our bodies to create borders built with respect and care.

Storytelling with Broken Box Mime Theater
Broken Box Mime Theater (BKBX) celebrates storytelling beyond words with Destination: Everywhere. Set to contemporary music and guided by a speaking emcee, this collection of stories includes visiting a jungle, romping around at a carnival, and a fairytale adventure that won’t be complete without the audience’s help. After the performance, families learn how to mime in a mini-mime workshop with the cast! Destination: Everywhere is a production of BKBXKids!, the family programming wing of BKBX.

In collaboration with BRIC, the Haiti Cultural Exchange will present Fanmi Asòto (Family of the Mother Drum) formed in 2014 to transmit Haitian traditions to future generations, through music, interactive workshops and activities in various aspects of Haitian culture. Haiti Cultural Exchange is a nonprofit organization established to develop, present and promote the cultural expressions of the Haitian people.

Venue Information:

BRIC House is Brooklyn’s cultural living room: a 40,000 square foot multi-disciplinary arts and media complex in the former Strand Theatre, where emerging and established artists can create work that deepens their practice and engages the diverse communities of the borough. 

Beginning Nov. 1, 2022, attendees of any BRIC House programming will no longer have to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter the building. Masks are encouraged but not required in all BRIC operated spaces. If you have questions regarding this protocol, please email Safety@bricartsmedia.org. BRIC is committed to welcoming people of all abilities. BRIC's main entrance, located on Rockwell Street, is fully accessible.
