Protocol of Attention and Adaptation
Presented by Project 404
In conjunction with the exhibition Alchemy, on view through August 12.

Project 404 offers an opportunity to take part in a seemingly paradoxical activity: using technological devices to look closely and deliberately. This practice consists of two phases. First, participants spend fifteen minutes looking silently at a single image on their individual devices. Second, during a colloquy of approximately 60 minutes, participants put aside their devices and discuss their experiences of the silent phase. Although these digital devices can endanger us with apathy, this practice aims to help us remain creatively engaged.

This workshop will take place before The Practice of Paying Attention. Please stay with us for this event!

ABOUT PROJECT 404

Project 404 responds to the dissociating nature of digital technology with an engaging social and pedagogical practice. The practice of attention allows us to explore our inner consciousness as well as our external environment. Project 404 suggests that we can pay attention to our digital devices and the images they display in a profound, thoughtful way. It reminds us that habitus, the Latin term for the repetition of customary activities, makes us who we are.
