MIXED MOVEMENT

Dance and live music combine, New York style. The brainchild of dancer, theatre artist, and poet Dawn Crandell, Mixed Movement gives dancers and musicians a chance to improvise, celebrate and share their skills.

Mixed Movement started in NYC in February of 2009 and has since been presented by Contact in Manchester, The Turn festival, East London Dance, Bristol Jam at the Bristol Old Vic, University of Madison's Line Breaks festival and at the Brooklyn Ballet.

An eclectic performance of multi-disciplinary dance, it uses an improvisational social networking format to bring dancers from any discipline together to create new dance ideas and push stylistic boundaries. Mixed Movement provides a platform for spontaneous duets across dance styles, the showcasing of new work, and for the audience to explore their movement.

Come experience and take part in The Winning Spiel, inspired by the life and work of steve ben israel, legendary performer, activist, jazz musician, poet, stand-up comic and core member of the Living Theater. Musician/creator Monique Mizrahi joins forces with sacred herbalist Paula Winograd and saxophonist Sarah Manning in this new participatory piece, a Yiddish-flavored pacifist ritual. Gather in the exhibition space at BRIC to harmonize through stretching, kvetching and songs. Everyone's a winner in this "seance to contact the living" (a line from steve ben's shows), so leave your guns at home, your phones at the door and come get yourself a third eye, baby!

Monique Mizrahi is connected to the Moon. She is a bassist, charango-player (South American 10-string instrument), singer-songwriter, educator and LGBT advocate. From her California roots and early love of punk, coming into her creative own in Rome, Italy and now Brooklyn, NY, where community is vibrant. As Honeybird she has performed throughout Europe and in May 2015 released an album Out Comes Woman chronicling her coming out experience. On March 5th, 2016 she will perform at the Brooklyn Art Museum Target Saturday and later that month will embark on an Italian tour with her trio Honeybird & the Monas.
