What is Intimate Eye?
Intimate Eye combines the experimental potential of black box theatre with the technical rigor and storytelling potential in cinema. Basically, we're taking scripts and making them into movies. We're just doing it in a black box theatre.
Why?
The black box theatre simplifies two elements that plague low-budget independent production. By shooting our films in a simple environment over which we have control of the sound and lighting, we can create high-quality films in a shorter amount of time. We can also put on our emphasis on capturing the performance of the actors, and exploring the best way to do so. We don't have to worry about loud trucks or neighbors ruining the sound. We don't have to avoid shooting logos or waiting until the light changes.
The class also explores collaborative filmmaking. Although there will be a director and a writer and crew positions, students and directors will work together to generate a shot list and production plan. This is another way that it brings us closer to theatre— by being driven by an ensemble effort.
Who should take this class?
People new to film who want to learn specific roles; experienced filmmakers who want to try a new approach; performance artists who want to learn ways to capture their work; media artists interested experimenting; filmmakers tired of the film being an 'auteur' driven medium.
Certification courses are for Brooklyn residents only. Not a Brooklyn resident? No problem! Feel free to register for any of our non-certification courses.
