300 years ago, whales abounded in the waters between Brooklyn and New Jersey, but overhunting and dirty waters have kept them away for generations. In recent years, whales have become so prevalent that ship captain Tom Paladino tells people on his whale watching tours “the Rockaways are the new Cape Cod.” But no one knows if the whales will stay, and Tom’s business - and the work being done by citizen scientists on his tours - depends on it.
