Featuring DJ and musician Kid Koala, producer Dan the Automator, and “the King of the Oddball Rappers” (Pitchfork) Del the Funky Homosapian, DELTRON 3030 is one of the great alternative hip-hop concept projects of all time. The original eponymous record from 2000 and last year’s follow up, Event II, recount the adventures of Del’s alter ego Deltron Zero in the year 3030 as he battles the huge corporations that rule the universe. It’s an Afrofuturist extravaganza with outer space themes in the tradition of Sun Ra and George Clinton, taking a back seat to neither in the loopy and fantastical allusions embedded in Del’s lyrics. Many samples in the music originated with the contemporary French classical composer William Sheller; for the live version, the supergroup is backed by an orchestra.

The sprawling Montréal hip-hop collective NOMADIC MASSIVE prepares us for launch. Claiming its hometown as “Montreal, Chili, Haiti, Brazil, France, Argentina, St-Vincent, Barbados, France, Algeria,” the group is an inclusive force to be reckoned with, and its live show is a multi-lingual eruption of old school hip-hop with live instrumentation and a deeply global vibe.
