Curated by Hallie Ringle

2015 Recipient of the BRIC Emerging Curator Fellowship

Opening Reception: July 8, 7-9pm

BRIC is pleased to present the exhibition Inherited, curated by Hallie Ringle, recipient of BRIC’s 2015 Emerging Curator Fellowship. Supporting and fostering the vision of a developing curator, this year’s Emerging Curator show will examine the work of five Brooklyn-based artists who engage their family members in their art either as collaborators or inspiration, creating notions of a family archive constructed through memory, stories, and images. The exhibition will feature artists Angel OteroKameelah Janan Rasheed, Jacolby Satterwhite, Keisha Scarville, and Sable Elyse Smith, working in a variety of different media, from photography to site-specific installations.

In much of her curatorial practice, Ringle is interested in artists who respond to heritage in various different ways; whether they make work that engages with social histories and cultural legacies or they source materials from their own personal past. A standout in the exhibition is the large-scale projection of Sable Elyse Smith whose video work, How We Tell Stories to Children, 2015, uses her parents as filters for personal events and global issues. Angel Otero and Jacolby Satterwhite ground their artistic practice in childhood memories inspired by their parents and grandparents. Kameelah Janan Rasheed and Keisha Scarville look beyond reality, reinventing their parent’s past through the creation of false archives and alternative histories.

Once a year, BRIC dedicates space in BRIC House to presenting an exhibition developed under the auspices of the BRIC Emerging Curator Program, supporting the realization and vision of an emerging curator who was chosen through a competitive selection process and named an Emerging Curatorial Fellow. The Program funds thematic group exhibitions of contemporary art focusing on Brooklyn artists.
