A long-time Celebrate Brooklyn! alum, The Mark Morris Dance Group gave its first concert in New York City in 1980, and subsequently toured across the United States and Europe. In 1988, MMDG was invited to become the national dance company of Belgium, spending three years in residence at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. Perhaps best noted for its commitment to live music, in 2001 the group opened the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn; providing a new home for the company, rehearsal space for the dance community and school outreach programs offering dance classes to students of all ages. The evening’s program will include three works by Mark Morris, accompanied by the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir. The program includes Resurrection, set to Richard Rodgers 1939 classic “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue” and featuring costumes by Isaac Mizrahi, followed by Lucky Charms, which “explodes onstage like fireworks on the Fourth of July.” (New York Times) Closing the program is Gloria, a seminal work danced to Vivaldi’s Gloria in D, with Mark Morris conducting.
When the first conductor stepped to the podium in Brooklyn in 1857 to launch the newly formed Brooklyn Philharmonic, Bizet, Liszt, Mussorgsky and Strauss were the strident young voices of new music. Now 154 years later, The Brooklyn Philharmonic boasts 166 world premiers, 65 works commissioned from living composers, and the accolades of 22 ASCAP awards for adventurous programming. In 2011 newly appointed Artistic Director Alan Pierson rebooted the Philharmonic, performing throughout the many neighborhoods of Brooklyn. This summer's performance at Celebrate Brooklyn! gives audiences a sneak peek of the Philharmonic's upcoming season.
